주체 has existed in the Korean lexicon since the end of the 19th century.  주체 has been translated many ways, and used for multiple purposes.  You will come across a vast array of responses to 주체 by Koreans both in the diaspora and in Korea.  Some people don’t know what it means at all, some get a sense of pride when they read/hear 주체, some associate it with North Korea.  When one of our owners decided to use 주체 for the name of our restaurant it was as a way to evoke the spirit of the definitions  “success through self reliance” or “stand strong”, that are sometimes used in association with 주체.  주체 St Paul is the physical manifestation of a Korean Woman who was raised in Minnesota, separated from her home, detached from her bloodline, forced to be a light unto herself without any direct cultural, personal, or intrinsically Korean influence.

주체 is a Korean space, created by a Korean woman, as a way for her to outwardly express the way Korea has manifested inside her throughout her life.  주체 means “Curated Destiny” to her. 주체 means “Curated Destiny” to us. 주체 is 주체.

This is our space, this is our story, this is our definition.  We are 주체.
